My Notes
I have a massive spreadsheet that I use to keep track of things. There are so many flashbacks and so many dates mentioned that I needed to be able to keep things accurate. This is a very small sliver of the notes that made The Healing Season possible.

The Importance of Timing
I did a lot of work to keep track of time while writing. After I finished book 1, I realized that I had no idea how much time had passed, which led to months of rewrites. These calendars were the very first method I developed to keep track of the days in 2020 and 2021, when the story mostly takes place. Once flashbacks started, I needed something more complex, which I think would be interesting to show you, but I don't even know how I would begin to show you the month-by-month spreadsheet I created that spanned from 1971 to 2031. Instead, here are the simple calendars I made at first. Please flip through them if you are interested.
Â
I realize that it probably would have made sense to a reader if the events were color-coded in the character's seasonal color (Finn/Zoey orange, Holden/Nessa red, Atticus/Harper blue, Daisy/Grant green), but these calendars existed long before that color scheme.

What's with the fruit?

Â

Finn, as Summer, is represented by a pineapple for its X-rated implications, and for its meaning to Finn and Zoey's relationship that is mentioned in Volume 1.
Â
Holden, as Autumn, is a pumpkin for two reasons: one, because he sees himself as boring in the beginning, which he explicitly says in Volume 2, and two, to me the pumpkin, amongst all the fruit, has the highest association with transformation (although Holden is in some ways the most mature of the brothers, through his relationship with Nessa, I think he has the most transformative experience).
Â
Atticus, as Winter, is represented by the pomegranate. Have you ever eaten a pomegranate? As a Floridian, I had not; it's kind of rare to find one here. When I was toying with this fruit idea, I felt like it was only fair for me to actually eat a pomegranate before I could confidently assign the fruit to Atty. Honestly, after all the time and effort it took to have what was the most complex fruit-eating experience of my life, I can say with full conviction that there could be no fruit more suited to Atticus. I also like the association to the Persephone story (yes, I am aware the Greek mythology story doesn't perfectly match my story), the pomegranate seeds, the disappearance of the goddess of spring during winter, and the passage of seasons are all fitting tie-ins to my books.
Â
Daisy, as Spring, is represented by the peach, which is sweet and luscious. The exterior of a peach feels like an invitation; "eat me!" It's hard to get into the deadly peach pit, but if you do, I hope you enjoy the cyanide you find inside. This comparison is meant to show Daisy's temperament. She is lovely, but if you manage to fuck with her or her kids enough to get to the deadly insides, she will try to ruin you.

I used each fruit in its respective book as my passage-of-time symbol. I thought the Persephone/fruit metaphor worked well.
All the McNallys are embodied by a fruit that is known for its association with its respective season.

An EXTRA spoiler warning
Many of the characters pictured here are pictured in more than one phase of their lives, simply seeing them in the states they are in may spoil plot points.
